After a year and a half of fighting alongside Betty Rose Allen and her late mother Beatriz Allen to defeat eviction attempts orchestrated by Tech CEO / Speculator Tariq Hilaly, she won. Yesterday the jury sided with her.
Huge thanks to Tenderloin Housing Clinic, San Francisco Anti-Displacement Coalition and everyone who made calls, signed petitions, came to actions and helped build pressure around this case. We gotta keep fighting to #RepealTheEllisAct, #RepealCostaHawkins and demand #RealRentControlNow!
Betty Rose Allen, a tenant and educator who was born in SF has lived in her home here for almost 40 years, and her lawyers Raquel Fox and Margaret DeMatteo with Tenderloin Housing Clinic just defeated an Ellis Act eviction by jury trial for the first time in California’s history. She and her catastrophically ill mother Beatriz Allen were served with two separate eviction notices in 2016. They were orchestrated by Tech CEO / Speculator Landlord Tariq Hilaly, represented by attorney Mark Chernev and Justin Goodman with Zacks, Freedman & Patterson. The first was a suspected owner relative movie in, and the second was a retaliatory Ellis Act eviction. The jury correctly and justly ruled in Betty Rose Allen’s favor. This is a HUGE win for Betty Rose, her family, long time friends and neighbors, along with many in SF’s housing justice movements who have been fighting alongside her and her mother for the past year and a half.
I BELIEVE THAT WE WILL WIN! I BELIEVE THAT WE WILL WIN!!!
